George was eighteen years old and not married when he enlisted in the infantry on 12 May 1861.
He was 5' 10" in height with light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair.
He was sick in the hospital in Charlottesville on 09 August 1862. George was shown as
absent without leave from the 5th Virginia Infantry.
He re-enlisted in the cavalry at Berryville on 24 September
1862.
He was paroled on 20 April 1865 at Winchester.
George married Lucy Sonner on 11 April 1867.

This was the parole that George signed in April, 1865.
He carried this document on his person until his death
in Maypearl, Texas. This resulted in its poor condition.

After the Civil War ended, males in the South between the ages of 18 and 35 were required to carry a parole
in their pockets. If a young Southern man was stopped by Yankee soldiers and did
not have a parole, he was subject to arrest. The text of the above parole reads
as follows:

I G. W. Golladay
of C. S. Army, do hereby give this my parole of Honor, that I will not
take up arms against the United States Government until I am regularly
exchanged. And that if I am permitted to remain at my home I will
conduct myself as a good and peaceable citizen, and will respect the
laws in force where I reside, and will do nothing to the detriment of,
or in opposition to the United States Government. |
George was 86 years old when he applied for a Confederate pension in Texas on 09
May 1930. In correspondence regarding this application, the County Judge of
Ellis County noted that George "was in all of the war, knew both (Stonewall)
Jackson and (Robert E.) Lee and was in Jackson's command at the time of his
death, and probably should have had a pension before now."
He died on 25 December 1932 in the home of his son M. M. Golladay.
The cause of death was listed as intestinal toxemia and general debility due to
age.
