James was not married when he enlisted in 15 July 1861 at
Winchester, Virginia.
On 21 April 1862, he was promoted to Sergeant. He was absent
without leave on 07 Aug 1862. However, he soon reenlisted in the cavalry at Berryville
on 24 September 1862 and
also became a Sergeant.
There is a memo in archives dated 09 Feb 1864 concerning his return to 33rd
Virginia Infantry.
James married Attillia Jane Munch after the war on 14 March 1867.
He died on 23 March 1893. His wife was living in the St. David's
Church area in April of 1908 when she filed a pension application based on his
Civil War service. Attillia stated in her application that James "always said
his bad health was caused by exposure in the army" and that "his death was
caused by a complication of diseases". His cause of death was listed as Bright's
disease (kidney disease) and heart trouble. She also stated that "his comrades
called him a brave soldier".
