James married Attillia Jane Munch after the war on 14 March 1867.

He died on 23 March 1893. His wife was living in the St. David's Church area in April of 1908 when she filed a pension application based on his Civil War service. Attillia stated in her application that James "always said his bad health was caused by exposure in the army" and that "his death was caused by a complication of diseases". His cause of death was listed as Bright's disease (kidney disease) and heart trouble. She also stated that "his comrades called him a brave soldier".
