Alfred enlisted in the Confederate militia on 19 July 1861. When the company was called back into service by Gen. Joseph E. Johnston in November, Alfred re-enlisted on 13 Nov 1861. He was detailed on 15 Dec 1861 to work at Caroline Furnace to make iron.

Then Alfred joined the 33rd Virginia Infantry on 24 Mar 1862. He was killed during the battle of Antietam. His wife Julian died shortly after hearing of her husband's death. Alfred's death was particularly tragic because not only did he have a wife and two small children to support, his Mother-in-law Elizabeth (Golladay) Coverstone and Elizabeth's  youngest children also lived with Alfred's family. Elizabeth was a widow at this time.
