Calvin was 17 years old and single when he enlisted at Staunton, Virginia on 01
September 1864.
He initially served under Captain James A. Strain and then under
Captain William A. Lackey. He stated that he was in the war until he "was taken
home with typhoid fever" about a month before the surrender. He was paroled on
15 May 1865 at Staunton.
Calvin married Rachel Golladay on 15 October 1868.
Calvin was 73 years old when he applied for a pension in
February of 1919. He stated that he was crippled in the back from an accident at
a mill. He also had heart and kidney problems. Before Calvin became disabled, he
sold milk for a living. He stated that he had help from a small Negro boy who carried milk
for him.
