David was 5' 10 in height with blue eyes, dark complexion, and dark hair.

He was single when he enlisted in the Confederate militia in the summer of 1861. He was discharged later that year to work at an iron furnace.

David enlisted in the 18th Virginia Cavalry in January 1863 and later was transferred to the 23rd Virginia Cavalry.

After the war, he married Nancy Clem on 28 January 1869. In 1885, he made his living as a farmer near Mine Run Furnace.

He was 66 years old when on died on 13 October 1891.
 

   Buried at: Coverstone Cemetery at Dilbeck (Shenandoah County), Virginia
