David was twenty five years old and single when he enlisted on 18 April 1861 at Greenville in Augusta County, Virginia.
He was 6' 0" in height with brown eyes, fair complexion and sandy hair.
He was wounded in action on 23 March 1862 at Kernstown, but
apparently not seriously.
He was shot in the chest (sternum) on 09 June 1862 at the Battle
of Port Republic.
David returned to duty in August 1863. He was captured along
with most of the Stonewall Brigade on 12 May 1864 at the Battle of Spotsylvania.
He was sent to Fort Delaware, where he was imprisoned for the remainder of the
war. David was paroled on 12 June 1865.
David married Eliza Jane Golladay of Nelson County at the
residence of Captain John Donald in Hardwicksville (Buckingham County) on 15 April 1869.
On 25 June 1888, David was 52 years old and living near
Greenville when he filed a pension application for disability. He stated he had
breathing problems caused by the bullet wound that he had received to his chest.
David died near Greenville on 23 December 1902.
