Mortally wounded at Gettysburg, July 1863
Onesimus was not married when he enlisted in the militia on 19 July 1861 at Mt. Jackson. In early 1862, he
was assigned to work at a hay press.
He enlisted in the 2nd Virginia Infantry on 16 April 1862 at
Rudes Hill,
but
was in the cavalry from 30 April 1862 until 31 October 1862.
On 04 December 1862, Onesimus married Lucritia Golladay.
Onesimus returned to the Stonewall Brigade in February 1863, but was in a
hospital in Staunton on 13 April 1863 with typhoid fever. He returned to his regiment in May
of 1863.
Onesimus was reported missing in action at Gettysburg on 03 July 1863. He died in a US hospital at Gettysburg
that July.
Buried in an unknown soldier's grave at Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania
