Samuel Golladay Stratton

Samuel had black hair, dark complexion and hazel eyes. His height was 5 ft. 5 in.

He enlisted on 08 Nov 1862 at Lebanon and served in the Confederate Army until the fall of 1864. The Eighth Tennessee Cavalry was originally mustered in the field as the Fourth Tennessee Cavalry.  He was on detached service with Company K, 27th Tennessee Infantry until  02 Mar 1864. Samuel signed an Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. government on 15 Oct 1864 in Nashville.

After the war, he married Alice Fisher on 09 Nov 1865. From 1873-82, Samuel was the circuit court clerk for Wilson County, TN. After Alice's death, he married Leila M. Owen on 01 Dec 1881 in Talbot County, Georgia.

Samuel died at his home on 03 August 1909 and is buried in the Cedar Grove cemetery in Lebanon, Tennessee.

His wife Leila moved to Miami, Florida on 01 January 1921. She filed a widow's pension application in 1931 based on Samuel's Confederate military service. In this application, Leila stated that her husband had been "more than once wounded near to death" in defense of the South. However, the state of Florida pension board rejected this application because Samuel had signed the Oath to the U.S. government before the war had ended.
