William was married and had several children when the war began. He was almost
38 years old when he enlisted on 24 January 1864.
Although most of the Stonewall Brigade was captured at the
Battle of Spotsylvania on 12 May 1864, William was not one of those
captured. He was in the General Hospital in Staunton due to an arm injury.

However, he did become a Prisoner of War in October of 1864. He
was paroled on 05 May 1865.
In 1870, William was employed as a distiller and living with his
family in the River Heads District (Summerdean P.O.) of Augusta County. William
died on 27 February 1896.
Buried at: Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church Cemetery (Augusta
County), Virginia
