Samuel was not married when he enlisted on 18 Apr 1861

Height 5'8,  Black eyes, Dark hair, Dark complexion.

He was listed as sick in the hospital  at Staunton on 26 Jul 1862, probably from wounds inflicted by Elisha Weeks when Samuel attempted to arrest him as a deserter.

He is shown as deserted on 01 Dec 1862. However, the desertion roll on 31 Mar 1864 states he was supposed to be serving in Tennessee cavalry.

He did not marry until the war was over.
