Washington was not married when he enlisted at Staunton on 03 August 1861.

He was wounded at Port Republic.

Washington transferred to the cavalry on 01 January 1863, but returned to the infantry in August of 1863.

He married Eliza Wright on 29 November 1865.

Around 1870, Washington moved his family to Jefferson Township in Boone County, Indiana. He was a farmer and lived about 1/2 mile southeast of Shannondale. His older brother Adam had previously moved to Boone County in 1856.

After living many years in Indiana, Washington later moved to Harper County, Kansas.
