Alexander was originally from Augusta County, Virginia. He enlisted in the Morgan County Mounted Volunteer Militia  on 23 February 1865 at Versailles, Missouri. This Volunteer Militia was lead by Captain  A.J. Hart and was organized to defend against Confederate raiders.

He mustered out on 08 July 1865.
