Godfrey was 24 years old when he enlisted on 26 October 1863. His height was 5' 5" and he was born on in Logan County, Kentucky. His name was spelled "Gallada" in the U.S. military records.

Godfrey died of pneumonia in 27 December 1863 at Camp Mussey in Tennessee.
