Robert mustered in the 115th Indiana Infantry on 13 August 1863. His residence was listed as Vermillion County, Indiana. This regiment was organized for a term of six months service. His regiment marched to Tennessee and arrived at the Cumberland Gap on 03 October 1863. It saw action at Blue Springs on 10 October 1863 and action at Walker's Ford on 02 December 1863. The primary role of this unit was to provide guard and patrol duty in East Tennessee. Robert mustered out on 25 February 1864 with the rest of his regiment. He then re-enlisted in the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery.

Robert filed a pension application on 28 April 1873. He died on 19 May 1910.

After his death, Robert's wife Regina filed an application on 06 June 1910 for a widow's pension .
